Dr. Luigi Petrone is a leading expert in matters pertaining to both coatings and cargoes, specialising in the investigation of root causes behind coating failures and cargo contamination or damage. 

As cargo expert, he offers specialized guidance on ocean transportation and storage of a diverse array of commodities, whether bulk, packaged, or containerized, having conducted high-profile investigations into various issues such as deterioration, self-heating, water damage, contamination, liquefaction, fire and explosion risks, and infestation. With extensive knowledge and experience in dry bulk cargoes, liquid bulk cargoes and bunker fuels, Dr. Petrone is an expert in the IMSBC and IMDG Codes, which further enhances his credibility as an authoritative expert witness.

As a coating expert, Dr. Luigi Petrone conducts forensic investigations into the cause and extent of coating failures, advising also on the required repairs. Based on his extensive knowledge in both coating and biofouling, he routinely advises on the origin and cause of fouling to vessel’s hulls, opining also on the effectiveness and mode of hull cleaning both underwater and at drydock.

Throughout his Ph.D. in Chemistry and subsequent postdoctoral experiences, Dr. Luigi Petrone has conducted cutting-edge academic research within complex multidisciplinary projects, collaborating with renowned institutions such as Harvard University, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His research endevours have yielded publications in prestigious scientific journals, including Science and Nature Communications, from fundamental chemical interactions on surfaces to the development of novel antifouling materials and advancements in biomimetic materials. 

Dr. Petrone has been awarded chartered status by the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology. As a coating expert, he obtained the highest certification as ICorr Level 3 inspector and obtained the prestigious Diploma in Coatings for Corrosion Control with distinction.  In 2024, in recognition of his experience as an expert witness, Luigi had the honour of becoming a full member of the Baltic Expert Witness Association and of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
